Introduction

what it is?

tpad is a simple graphical ASCII text editor. It is written entirely in Tcl/Tk so it's very portable even though it is intended to be used mainly under Unix. tpad mimics Windows Notepad (TM) and has the same appearance and key bindings as Notepad has, while also adding some new features.

why does it exist?

Being a Unix system administrator, I wrote tpad to make life easier to Windows users (usually accustomed to use Notepad) that have to edit text files on a Unix server through the network, especially for simple edit tasks.

I think tpad can also be useful to Unix/Linux newbies who don't have the time to learn the powerful ones (vi(1) and emacs(1)) and just want a simple editor to start to work.

I wrote this myself simple because I wasn't able to find a good Notepad clone on the net and I wanted a program well written and easy to maintain so I can add new features to it as soon as I need them and without too much effort.

what do I need to run it?

You will need Tcl/Tk 8.4 because I used the new undo features built into the text(n) command - for sure I don't want to implement undo myself :-)

how will it evolve?

This version of tpad is quite similar to Windows XP (TM) Notepad. I've added some useful features Notepad doesn't have and I will continue to do so in the future, but tpad will always remain a simple editor similar to Notepad. If you are interested in further collaborative developments see the TODO list.

how do I contribute?

If you are a programmer you can also add new features yourself because tpad is free software, distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public Licence version 2 or later (at your own choice).

If you do this and want to include your changes into my version instead of starting off an independent devel branch please contact me through email. You can find my name and email address by choosing the About option under the Help menu.
